My National Dizzy & Balance Center Story
I was in shock one morning when I awakened dizzy and could not get out of bed! I finally started to move around after getting a cane. I could not believe that I felt unsafe doing such a simple task such as showering as the dizziness continued. I could not understand why the dizziness would not go away. Maybe, just turning 90 years of age was a factor.
After seeing an ENT doctor, he thought that my vestibular system had been disrupted from the IV antibiotics I had for another diagnosis. He referred me to the National Dizzy & Balance Center for an evaluation.
Mark (audiologist) did an extensive, almost space age, diagnostic test which confirmed my vestibular system had been destroyed on my left side. To say the least, I was in shock. Mark felt that I had a good chance to retrain my brain through therapy! I was more than skeptical.
It took fifteen one hour visits to feel normal most of the time. Their technical skills are outstanding; but I can not help believe their support and listening to me was just as important. I grew to look forward to my sessions, and seeing how I could meet the challenges while having a laugh with the therapists!
I am currently discharged and doing well with an occasional dizzy spell, that I can control with exercises when necessary.
Thank you for helping me get 85 to 90% of my balance back! What a blessing--who would guess you can retrain the brain at 90 years of age. I would recommend the National Dizzy & Balance Center staff heartily and without reservation.
